Character Design Week 2

This week in our Character design workshop we focused on clothing and the way objects can be designed to represent the character you are trying to design. We started by looking at the design of character's clothing and their weapons from Lord of the Rings.

To start with we looked at Gimli and how his armour incorporates lots of sharp angles and common designs as a way of showing the strength and power of the Dwarven race, a race that don't have the time to create beautiful pieces of armour, and would rather create something that has a practical use as well as a military use. The same can be said for the weapons that the created as well. The axes of the dwarves are made with very strong shapes and lines as well, another way of showing the strong will of the race that wields the weapon, and as with the armour, the Axe looks like it was designed to serve a purpose and not just to look pretty when being swung.

We then looked at a race that is the complete opposite of the Dwarves, the immoral race of the elves. The armour designs for this race show how the long lives of the elves can influence the way their armour and weapons look. Incorporating more curves and flair into their weaponry, perfectly encapsulates the attitudes and history of the Elven race. A race that is revered for its elegance and beauty.

The task for this lesson was to take a word that we were given and to create a character that would fit the idea of that word. I was given a wizard to design. Before I could start drawing I needed to decide on how the setting that the character will be inhabiting, what kind of environment and era are they going to be in. I decided to go for a more eastern, design. Making my Wizard, who was technically more of a witch, look much more mysterious by covering her face and having her wear more clothing then other characters would. I also didn't want her to carry around many item's such as a the generic staff or book, so I made her have tattoos on certain parts of her body as a way of showing her magical abilities, also as being a way for her to use magic. Now here we have the character that I designed, It's not finished yet but once I'm done with the rest of my work I will go back and finish her then re upload
